5 miles from home - details of the race and how to measure your time

Dear crews,
Below is some info about how the 5 miles from home race will work. Please read all of it if you can but because I am a teacher and know you probably won't I've put the important bits in bold.
Crews are responsible for setting their own course. The course must be 5 miles (8047 meters) long, and the start and finish points should be in roughly the same place so that the course is either “out and back” or “round and about”, and crews do not get an advantage by rowing exclusively down weather or down tide.
Your race must take place between 1200 GMT on 7 May to 1200 GMT on 9 May 2021
Proof of time and distance: When submitting results to the organisers of each leg, crews must submit proof of time, distance and category in the form of a read out from a timing app and a picture of the crew after completion of the challenge. By entering, the crew agrees to these images being published by the organisers and used on social media. The timing app should display the time taken for rowing exactly 5 miles or 8045 meters.
Submission of Result: (by one hour after the closing of the time Window for completion of challenge). It is the responsibility of the crew to ensure that their results are submitted to the organisersby 1300 GMT on the Sunday of the Window for that challenge.
So how should we measure our times?
I suggest we use Strava. This is an App which runs on Iphones or Android and is free and easy to use.
I think it would be safest if at least two people in each crew record the row so it would be great if lots of people could try using it!. First install Strava from your preferred App store ... happy to help if anyone needs more info on this
Strava is free but regularly offers you a Free trial of it's paid for version ... I always just close this window using the x in the top corner every time it appears Once installed you will see the Strava application on your phone screen as an orange icon.
Tap to open it and at the bottom of the screen you will see a number of choices one of which is Record. Tap this and a screen showing a map with a blue dot for your location on it.
Before you press the big Start button you need to check you are recording a Row.
Underneath the map there are some symbols. Tap the second one in which might be a picture of a bike or a walking boot. This will show you a list of sports to choose from.
Scroll down a long way and after Kayaking and Rock Climbing you will eventually find crossed oars for rowing.
Tap on it to choose it. Then you are ready and just need to press Start.
I would recommend pressing the home key after you start you recording so that you don't accidentally stop it! When you finish your row open Strava again and press the Orange button with a square in it. This will ask you if you want to resume or Finish. Press finish and when you are next in Wifi range your row will appear.
You can crop the recording to make it exactly 5 miles afterwards ...

Re: 5 miles from home - details of the race and how to measure your time
As rowing is a water borne sport shouldn't the distance be measured in Nautical miles - in which case 5nm is 9260 metres. There you are boys and girls, that is an extra 1214 metres for you to row!!!!
Where are we rowing to from Sweare deep? Neither to Verner or East Milton gives us a 5 mile race. We could do 2.5 miles from Sweare Deep and turn then. This will give us a 5 mile row exactly Geoff

Hi Martin. This is what I do on my Samsung phone. After Stava processes your activity and shows you the map in top right of the screen tap on the three lines. One of the options is Edit and the other is Crop. Crop gives you a line under your map with a green circle at one end and a checked circle at the other. You can move both or either until you have the section you want. Then just Save.
Hope it works for you!
