Bembridge Row 19th August FURTHER UPDATE

Some more detail for Wednesday's row....

Tuesday 18th August 17:00
The intention is to try and load the two Galleys on to trailers after Karen's excursion row on Tuesday evening. The current expectation is that they will be back at the boat park around 17:00. It would be good if some of us who are not on Karen's row could get to the boat park at 17:00 to help with the loading. Dave and Chris will then drive the boats out of the park (back home in Dave's case and either to Marilyn's or outside Nigel's in Chris' case).
We will need to remember to also take radios. As we will need to be monitoring on channel 16 but communicating with each other on channel 8, it might be worth taking two radios per boat.
Also, we will need to take a trailer lock for each trailer.

Wednesday 19th August
We need to be at the Camber at Old Portsmouth between 08:15 and 08:30 to unload the boats and hopefully secure spaces for the trailers; there are 6 available trailer spaces on a first come first serve basis. Fortunately we will not have competition for these with CRAC as they will be taking their two trailers back to Northney after launching.

Regarding transport arrangements on the day:
Joanna - I assume you will make your way directly to the Camber.
Michael and Lesley will be taking Marilyn, Joan and Tom.
Peter will be travelling directly to the Camber (Peter's wife Sarah will be in one of the Shoveller boats).
Alison - I would suggest that you travel with Chris. I will probably also travel with Chris. I am guessing we will need to meet up about 07:30 (ish) at Marilyn's or Nigel's depending where the boat is.
Geoff - if you need a lift, there will be space with Chris.

There is a car park alongside the slipway and also one before the Boat Stack. Hopefully, there should be plenty of parking when we arrive. Cost for parking is £13 a day.

The timetable for the day is as previously stated:

08:15 Arrive at Camber slipway in Old Portsmouth.
08:15 to 09:15 Unload boats at Old Portsmouth (with trailers to be left in trailer spaces at nearby Camber car park).
09:30 Depart Old Portsmouth
11:30 Arrive Bembridge. Drink at Sailing Club. I do not have a definitive statement regarding food but it appears that Richard from the Shovellers and his crew will be having fish and chips at beach cafe at St Helens whereas Guy (Shovellers and CRAC) might be going to The Point, which has a few different food options.
Before 15:00 Depart Bembridge
17:00 Arrive Old Portsmouth and recover boats to trailers
18:00 to 18:30 Arrive back at Langstone and put boats back on dollys

Sorry that I cannot be more definitive on the food options. If anyone did want fish and chips, please reply to this post as Richard indicated that they need to let the cafe know how many in advance.

I suggest that we each pay £6 to cover the fuel and parking costs for the towers/drivers. Please pay this in to the Cutters bank account with a reference of "BEMB ROW" followed by your name. Additionally you will need to pay your £3 pin money.

Backup Option in the event of windy conditions
If the weather conditions are not safe to cross the Solent but are safe to row within Portsmouth Harbour (which the most recent forecast is indicating), I believe that the backup plan will be to row down Portsmouth Harbour with a pub stop and a cafe stop. I am not sure where but would guess the cafe will be the Salt Cafe at Wicor Marina.

An update on Wednesday from Guy (who is representing both Shovellers and CRAC):

The latest weather forecasts suggest that conditions may not be suitable for a crossing- gusting up to mid twenties in knots - but that said conditions would be ok for a row to the top of Portsmouth Harbour.
For many this would represent a good alternative
Forecasts being what they are we will continue to monitor & may ultimately make the final decision on the day
Unless the weather changes dramatically for the worse however we will proceed to meet as planned & if necessary switch to a row up the harbour
We could row to the very nice Salt Cafe in Wicor Marina Portchester & perhaps stop off at the Jolly Roger on the way back - Hardway

Thanks to everyone who came along to help load the boats on to their trailers today.

We will meet at 07:15 tomorrow morning in the boat park to move the trailers and attach to Chris and Michael's cars and finalise lift arrangements. Dave and Josie will also be taking their car.

The destination (Bembridge or Portsmouth Harbour) will be decided on the day although the current opinion of the Shovellers is that it is more likely to be Portsmouth Harbour.

Before setting off tomorrow morning, please check the forum just in case there are any new updates.

Dave, thanks for organising today.
We five “oldies” got LL up to the boat park on her launching trolley, the pneumatic wheels make such a difference. Might well be worth considering changing the wheels on the launching trolleys to make recovery easier for all.

If any Cutters are in the vicinity of the boat park tomorrow at about 09:40ish, it would be great if you could help get Sallyport back into the park, cleaned and put back on to it's dolly. Sadly there was too much water to get her back after her day out in Portsmouth Harbour today.
