Well what a great afternoon for mucking about in boats!
The purpose of the “time trials” today was to test the current handicaps being utilised in local events both for Solent Galleys and Celtic Longboats. The plan was simple in that the same crews would row in different boats over a fixed course of 1 kilometre utilising the Strava app to measure.
So this afternoon the two crews set off in simulated race mode at around high tide to row the 1k from the Langstone Bridge Buoy to the MDL Marina Marker with the actual course and time being recorded. Both crews then changed boats at the North Slip and then completed the course again.
Rachel and Frances armed with a variety of measuring kit coxed their respective crews recoding times, distance etc.
The outcome in short was that both crews completed the course more quickly in the Celtic than the Galley which does raise a question over the GRR handicap where the Galley is so very far behind the Celtic and will indeed be the subject of some clever bods looking at local OY handicaps to see whether the current one is indeed just and fair or over generous to the Galley…………
A big thank you to everyone that participated in this afternoons exercise, the data has been passed on to the Three Harbours OY Handicap Group for their consideration and I will feed back on their deliberations.
