Cutters, this year the Cork Ocean to City Race is on the 8th June.
For those not unfamiliar with this the Cutters have sent a boat for the last couple of years with a crew. Its a 15 Mile race from the entrance to Cork Harbour - its about a 3 hour row/race. The blurb goes like this:
An Rás Mór ('The Big Race') is a traditional & fixed seat rowing race that takes place annually in Cork Harbour, Ireland. It includes races over four distances through Cork Harbour:
- Ocean Course (15 nautical miles)
- City Course (12 nautical miles)
- Monkstown Course (7 nautical miles)
- Youth Course (2.5 nautical miles)
The race attracts entries from all over the world competing in all types of rowing boats and kayaks. More than just a race, there’s something for everyone at the Ocean to City Festival; dragon boat races, currach & kayak trips, Corkumnavigation, harbour cruises, Navy tours, angling trips, maritime exhibitions, films and talks, food and craft markets, music, craic and lots of free family entertainment.
Usually Colin or I take the Landy and carry 6 or 7 and a boat. We go across Friday on the Ferry, stay in an acceptable/economic Hotel in the centre of Cork and go rowing Saturday... there is a large party in the evening with much as to be expected Irish hospitality. We then catch an overnight ferry Sunday arriving home very early Monday Morning. in 2011 it cost £280/person; and 2012 the costs per person - Hotel; petrol;ferry; entry fees etc worked out at £324.
If anyone is interested in taking a Galley or 2 to this event this year, let me know by May 3rd as the early booking fee of €40 (March 14 - May 11) applies otherwise its Just-in-time Fee: €50 (May 12 - May 25).
