Dear members,
After a discussion at the first meeting of your new committee this is what we are proposing to address the balance between training and excursion rows. Please post below if you have any comments.
The Saturday and weekly excursion rows are what our club is all about and we want to give these priority over other rows. These are open to all members and are key to the club ethos of being a welcoming village club providing enjoyable rows for everyone.
Events will continue to be posted a few weeks in advance and crews will be chosen to allow time for them to get together and train if they would like to. This often happens quite early for the Great River Race as registration is usually a few months before the event. When choosing crews we will continue to aim for a balance between competitive race crews and crews who want to experience the event.
With the increase in the number of Celtic Longboats in the local harbours there are more Celtic longboat events proposed and these present us with a challenge as we are used to having five boats for events and not one! However the proposed format for these is to have mens, ladies and mixed long races and mens, ladies and mixed short races. So this gives opportunities for up to twenty four rowers to take part. The crews for the long races will be chosen to be competitive where possible.
We would like to encourage members to post rows, in addition to the regular weekly and Saturday rows, either for training or excursions but there must always be an experienced row organiser and cox on every row who can check the weather conditions and tides.
When posting an additional row please avoid the weekly excursion row and the Saturday row. If it is a training row for an event please say which boat you would like to use and name the crew and cox in your post. We are aware that some members would sometime prefer shorter, training rows with a different balance of rowing to cake/beer. Please make it clear when posting that this is what you are planning so that no one gets a nasty surprise.
