Great River Race 10th September 2022

RichardH
This post was updated on .
One of the highlights of the rowing year up until and including 2019 was the Great River Race - a 21.5 mile row from the former entrance to Millwall Docks to Ham House, a mile upstream from Richmond.   It is hoped that the Great River Race  will take place again this year on Saturday 10th September.  It is a really interesting row up the Thames and many in the club have taken part over the years.  Indeed the over 60's men have won the over 60's category for many years in a row, but we have won many other prizes too.  As yet there are no details about timings or cost but in 2019 the adult entry fee was £77 per person, which included entry fee and contribution towards the cost of towing boats to London.  In addition there was also a coach fee of about £28 per person as we hired a coach to transport us to the start and collect us from the finish.   Costs will be higher this year but we don't know by how much.

Whilst there is no guarantee that the race will happen, it has been suggested that we plan as if it will.   Usually by now members are placed into teams and can start training together.   Therefore if you would like to take part in the GRR this year (assuming it happens), please can you post below saying your first second and third preference of boat (Solent Galley, Claydon, Teifi or Celtic Longboat) and your age category (under 40; veteran - between 40 - 59; or super veteran - over 60).   Your age is as of 10.09.22 the day of the race).  I can probably work out male and female.  Also do you want to be in a competitive team or a fun team, who wants to complete the course but not chasing any prize.  There are a finite number of seats in boats and not everyone can have their first or second choice as the committee has to balance the wider needs of the club.  Also I know that the over 60's men will be keen to continue their tradition of holding the men's supervet title in Gladys.

If you have any questions then please ask someone who has done it before or a member of the committee.  Please post below by Sunday 29th May if you would like to take part.  We will try to sort out teams within a week of the deadline and if more information becomes available we will share it.  For more information do look at the www.greatriverrace.co.uk.

Definitely would like to do again in super vet category to hold the trophy held by Gladys.

An excellent post by Richard,  taking the view that "the grr will take place" means we can have good strong teams ready to go and trained up.

Yes please for me Richard,

Have done it 3 times as fun, I’d love to go for it in a competitive boat, but totally understand if that’s not possible - just happy to be there!!

Any boat except a tiefi please. So happy with Celtic, Galley or Claydon - wherever there’s a space going.
And have been a row/cox all 3 times I’ve entered, so very happy to row and cox again.

….oh and I’m a 40-59 vet

Thanks, Matt

SV/60, with reputation for pulling, would like position in winning boat.
Seeks out like minded group of 5 who like putting glass-fibre under excessive strain.
Would like to put similar group of 6 under pressure to exert a similar amount of strain on another glass-fibre contraption.

Being translated, that means:-
Supervet, well over 60 .
1). Gladys
2). Mabel
3). Anything else

4) Can tow if required.

I have heard great things about the great river race and would like to take part if possible, but as I’m a newish member I’m happy to come up and support if there are not enough spaces. I would probably like to do it non-competitively. I am a super vet by the way.
Thanks!

Yes please Richard, Happy in either the Galleys or Claydons. Would like to be competitive but also willing to row for fun depending on numbers. I’m in the super Vets unless there is a super super category for over 70’s!!
Thanks, Mike
