Hoi Larnten comes to Langstone

Mike Gilbert
...Whats that? Hoi Larnten is the name of a 4 oared, fixed seat traditional wooden St Ayles Skiff owned by the Coastal Rowing Association of Blakeney (CRAB). DSC_0367.jpg, Seen here on a trailer and doing man-overboard practice; DSC_0370.jpg

She is one of a new class of traditional rowing boat, created specifically to be built at low cost from a kit.  Usually the builders then row the boats for recreation or competitively in local regattas - in Scotland there are nearly 100 boats built or in build working with the SCRA. The World Championships take place in Ullapool in the summer, and in 2013 CRAB made a good impression for a first time entry, coming 16th out out 31 entries, see http://skiffieworlds.com/.

Great River Race rowers will remember the 2 x North Berwick Skiffs that raced past us somewhere around Chiswick (they came second in the worlds) .... In England there are just a handful, with CRAB's second boat nearing completion and 2 x boats in Wells under way.

We had tried to get Hoi Larnten down over the New Year for Cutters to try out, but the weather was so poor we had to cancel. However this Sunday, while looking dull, is forecast to be dry and with little wind.... so some CRAB members are bringing the boat down on Friday and making her available for our Club rowing on Sunday by the Mill.  So dust off your rowing kit, and get down to see and try her out from 11.45!

Mike thanks for arranging this, I will be very interested to have a row and check out the boat this Sunday. Looks good on the internet pics. Hope the weather holds out.
