Our charity for 2018 - Melon School in Kenya

Hi all,
        Some of you will already have heard me talk about the school in Kenya where I was lucky enough to teach in October last year. I was totally inspired by what I saw there and more than anything by the children themselves, so when I came back I asked the committee if they would consider making it our charity for the Great River Race. They not only agreed but suggested that, since it is the club's 20th year, we could make it our 'Charity of the Year' and aim to raise £2,000 towards the building of the new school.
I really hope you will all feel able to support this effort for a really good cause!

Some more about the school ....

The school is in a slum in Nakuru which is a fairly large town about 3 hours from Nairobi. It's aim is to be 'a haven for over 450 street children from Nakuru, to provide them with food, education and clothing in a nurturing environment where they feel safe and loved.'  They are really living up to this aim and the children were happy, enthusiastic and very keen to learn. Even when it poured with rain and the classrooms flooded they just climbed up onto their desks and kept working! The group I went with were local teachers and other volunteers, many of whom have been going for a few years now. They started a UK charity to raise money to build a new brick school to replace the current  tin sheds and have been going out regularly to help with the work. They have set themselves the tough target of raising the money needed to complete the buildings by the end of 2018 and that is what I am hoping we can help with.
