Please read re open row.

Christine
Hi All,
If you are the duty rower on an open row on Sunday's.  Please could you go to the boat park for the first 20-30minutes and let non members know we are not rowing due to the weather conditions.  We had a complaint that no one came on Sunday.  People coming to try out are not able to access the forum.  We can also try and put a note on the diary page.
I appreciate that these people row for free at the club's discretion.  But it's best to try and give a positive club image.
Thanks Christine

Hi Christine

One of the problems here is that newcomers arrive throughout and during the open row and rarely at the beginning, hence attending for the first 30 minutes or so wont likely deal with this situation.

We could perhaps review the weather 24 hours prior to open row and update the diary with a weather view?

Surely non members can see and read the forum?

I have just logged out and tested that theory and although I am not able to write or input text, I am able to read the forum, hence I am assuming that the general public can access it as well?

Please advise?
Thanks, Best
Andy

I think we need an A board or a blackboard to put up saying rowing cancelled due to weather, external event, whatever... I shall keep my eyes open for one ...or even a set of standard words to bolt (?) to the gate ?

Great idea Andrew. For those of us that have a few miles to travel, it would be a nuisance to have to travel and hang around in bad weather for people who have not the sense to realise that being on the water in an open boat with unsuitable weather is not appropriate Lets face it, whoever turned up on Sunday in that pouring rain and strong wind and complained that they could not row may not be cutters material

I honestly dont think that this could be any clearer and all non members are able to read the forum but not able to post on it.

Hi All

Unfortunately the forecast for Sunday is not good at all and most certainly wont be suitable for new comers, novices and beginners.

Heavy rain is forecast with Force 5 SSW winds gusting 7 to 8.

The shore crew and your hosts on the day are Ron , Cheryl and Lesley and Ron will post on this thread weather updates and whether the row will go ahead.

Happy Bank Holiday everyone.
Best
Andy

The problem is that some newcomers don’t know the system and just turn up on the off-chance. I think they should have someone to talk to and perhaps show them the boats.

But someone still has to put the boards out. Why can’t they hang around for 20 minutes so greet anyone arriving hoping for a row?

I think Andy is correct in saying that the new people arrive all through the session - not just in the first 20 minutes...

Most people who are planning to come arrive at the advertised time. Later arrivals tend to be passers-by. Anyway, it would be unreasonable to expect the beachmaster to stay for the whole time in the rain...

Does it just not make sense to write on the bottom of wherever we advertise it that if the weather is wet or windy the open row will be cancelled as dangerous to experienced & novice

As nobody wants to turn out for even 20 mins on a rough day,

Surely that tells all concerned

I notice board would work very well and cover those who don't check the forum.

Surely a simply notice board worded,

There will be no rowing today due to weather conditions, beyond our safety limits.

Would suffice or similar.

Getting out of bed at 7 / 8 on a Sunday morning and having to drive, park and walk in to tell someone/s that it is too wet and windy for us to be be able to safely row, when it is chucking it down and blowing a gale seems bonkers to me.

Surely a post on the forum and a cancellation notice board will adequately cover everything comprehensively?

That someone still has to get up and put the notice board out. I don’t think it is too much to ask that they hang around for a few minutes just in case someone who doesn’t know the system turns up.

Still personally think writing it on bottom of where we advertise makes sense !!!
Well it would to me if I read it, but then I wouldn't turn up anyway if raining for a new experience thats not singing in the rain !!

As while they read about the invite to have a go they will also see that if weather bad please don't come, what is the point of someone turning up for ten minutes then going when they can still turn up within the hour advertised
