The Shovellers, who have the use of the Galleys, Joyce and Doreen, are organising a row from Old Portsmouth to Bembridge and back on Wednesday 19th August and have kindly invited us. Both of their Galleys will be going as well as at least 2 Pilot Gigs, including one of CRACs. The flotilla will be accompanied by a safety boat.
This will be a full day tow row with a nice amount of time in Bembridge and St Helens for food and drink. The intention is that we will take both of our Solent Galleys assuming we can get a crew for both. From Rachel's original post, I already know of 7 / 8 rowers, so we will need just 4 / 5 more rowers.
Plans for the day are as follows:
08:00 to 09:30 Unload boats at Old Portsmouth (location where trailers are to be left is still being negotiated by the Shovellers)
09:30 Depart Old Portsmouth
11:30 Arrive Bembridge. Drink at Sailing Club, followed by fish and chips at beach cafe at St Helens.
Before 15:00 Depart Bembridge (I am not sure what rowing across the Solent with a stomach full of fish and chips will be like!!!!)
17:00 Arrive Old Portsmouth and recover boats to trailers
18:00 to 18:30 Arrive back at Langstone
Please ensure that you have a life jacket or preserver with you on the day.
The current intention is to try and load the Galleys on to their trailers on the evening of Tuesday 18th and tow them from the park. Dave C and Chris W have kindly offered to tow.
This should be an exciting and fun day out but please only sign up if you are confident of the following:
1. Rowing over 20 miles during the day, much of it with little tidal assistance, and at a reasonable rate as the flotilla will need to stay together (and I am led to believe that the other crews contain strong and experienced rowers).
2. Changing positions whilst on the Solent where we might experience bigger swells than we are used to; the need to keep low will be more important than usual.
3. Crossing busy shipping lanes.
We will post more exact arrangements regarding meet up times nearer the 19th. There is no free parking at Old Portsmouth, so it will make sense to lift share.
Apart from the usual pin money, there will be an additional cost to cover the towers petrol and parking costs. We will let you know details of these nearer the time.
