Advice before the cold weather hits us

Pam P
Can I – and all the new rowers – please ask your advice before the weather turns horrid. Says me sitting here in a T shirt and shorts…

Could we hear what you wear to keep warm when rowing in the cold weather please. I’m particularly interested in hands, and feet / legs up to just over knees, given we have to wade into the water.  Answers from a few would be really helpful please , given the range of budgets between us all. Any particular local suppliers?

Many thanks from us newies.

Hi Pam
Wellies and rowing gloves and a hat with leggings and layers on top with a Cutters jacket is what I wear.

Thermal insoles high wellies (esp. orange!!) will see you through the whole of winter and many years to come….others may laugh, but trust me they work wonders when It comes to warmth and waterproof, and you’ll get noticed in all weathers - trust me!!

A neoprene stocking known as chill cheaters are very good,  they come right up to thighs and so alow for deeper immersion that Wellington or sea boots. Made by a company called Reed. Available on line.  Need to wear with sandal or wet shoe to avoid damage to fabric.  Known by steph as "pull-ups". One can take the
mick,  but they are very effective

One of the best brands of thermal and waterproof socks is seal skin.  Available in cotswold outdoor shops.

As for clothing,  wear layers.  Start off wearing 3 and reduce as body warms up.

Always have a windproof waterproof layer to prevent chilling.

Oh yes there is a lot to be said for pull ups/hold ups 🤣🤣😂.
Put a smile on my face and made me chuckle, thanks Mark 😊 👍👍.

One thing I had not thought of is a woolly hat, nice one now on my to get list.
I don't think there is any woolly pull ups/hold ups though, back in my day they were called leg warmers 😲🤐😅😂.

I have not done a winter yet Pam so same as you for advice.

Thanks everyone
Steph

Just the info we newies need, thank you all for sharing your winter dress code.

Matt, what a relief you backed off the requirement for orange - such a tricky colour to carry off with flair.

Chill cheaters leak after a few outings , so wouldn't waste money on them , I've bought 2 pairs . Sealskin waterproof socks  are good and knee height wellies . Best wear layers of sports type clothing with thermals for the extra cold days .
