The discussion also mentioned there are more channels to use other than Ch8 for ship to ship. During Maydays to coast guard does not ask you to change channels. If you have done a course you should be aware.

I have been a professional yacht skipper for 35 years. I have listened to lots of Maydays. If they changed channels it is because they have downgraded the mayday. If the incident is stil life threatening ch 16 is used. The coastguard will change to ch 0 if they are talking to the lifeboats. I'm mystified about p4 it's not on list in handbook.
