Correct radio procedures

Andrew B
Now that we are all trained up on VHFs, its time to put yourself in the position of the poor coastguard who received the MAYDAY call ....in this case a German coastguard, as discussed with some of you at the Deck today...

The discussion also mentioned there are more channels to use other than Ch8 for ship to ship. During Maydays to coast guard does not ask you to change channels. If you have done a course you should be aware.

Geoff, I did say there are more channels than 8 or P4...

In my experience the Coastguard does move a conversation to another channel in order to keep Channel 16 clear - they did it with me.

Re: Correct radio procedures

Geoff
I have been a professional yacht skipper for 35 years. I have listened to lots of Maydays. If they changed channels it is because they have downgraded the mayday. If the incident is stil life threatening ch 16 is used. The coastguard will change to ch 0 if they are talking to the lifeboats. I'm mystified about p4 it's not on list in handbook.
