I have had a phone call from Richard Lanchester (not a club member) who is very concerned about abusive behaviour of jet skis near the Ferryboat in Langstone Harbour. His 7 year old grandson was playing in the water near the Ferryboat when a jet ski approached to within 4 meters and caused much distress to the child by his actions. He would like to start a campaign to restrict jet skis (or even ban them) at Ferryboat. He is looking for support so I told him I would post this on the forum and if you are interested in supporting him in his campaign, then please get in touch with him directly on 07462047279
Incident reporting at least for Chichester Harbour is:
By Phone 01243 512 301
By VHF channel 14. Call sign Chichester Harbour radio or Chichester Harbour Patrol
These are covered normal office hours plus Saturday mornings from April - Sept
Or logging incident online at www.concervancy.co.uk
The above information is from the Chichester Harbour Information to mariners 2020.
Maybe a good idea to add the number to your mobile phone!
Again the jet skis were in the harbour yesterday! Again they were speeding, as were an accompanying black rib which went even faster! They took 6 minutes to travel from Langstone bridge to the Emsworth channel, so averaging about 16 mph.
Did as Alan suggested above, - reported it on channel 14, and later at the Chi conservancy office at Emsworth (whilst eating my well earned ice cream!).
The vhf was not heard by the 2 in-harbour conservancy launches on the water locally, so remember that when you need to communicate via hand-held vhf's in the harbour. I think I was probably shielded by the close-by Northney shoreline, hence no on-the-water response.
My lesson from the day - remember to programme the chi hbr phone number into your mobile before you get on the water! Thanks Alan for putting up the details here on the forum!
There were two JetSki related fatalities over the weekend. In the Menai Straits, a woman in a Rib was killed in a collision with a JetSki and in the Solent the body of a JetSki owner was finally recovered on a beach after being missing for several days after his craft had been found empty.
...and a another doing donuts by the bridge again yesterday
