The more i read the more i realise i do not know eg
"coefficient 113" "strava" etc etc I have a very large dictionary of nautical terms ,words and their meaning and origination but i regret to say neither of these two examples are in there and no ,it's not called get knotted ! regards |
Bitesize (???) definition of coefficient:-
Measure the heights of high and low tides over a period of time. Now make an average of the heights of high tide = AVERAGE HIGH TIDE. Now do the same to get an average of the low tide heights = AVERAGE LOW TIDE. The difference is the AVERAGE TIDAL RANGE. At Langstone average high tides will be about 4.6 metres, and average low tides about 1.2 metres, so the AVERAGE TIDAL RANGE is about (4.6 - 1.2)= 3.4 metres. This average tidal range is a 100% COEFFICIENT of the normal average range of the tides. [100% is equivalent to 3.4 metres] If the tides are less in range (as during neap tides) then the COEFFICIENT OF TIDAL RANGE will be less. Thus for neap tides at Langstone we might have a high tide =3.5 metres, and a low tide of 2.5 metres, so the range would be (3.5 - 2.5) = 1.0 metres. Thus the coefficient (based on the above example) would be [(1.0 diveded by 3.4) times 100] percent. I.e. 29.4 % If we are having SPRING tides at Langstone they will have larger coefficients, and if the spring tide has a high water ABOVE the normal AVERAGE HIGH TIDE then the coefficient will be larger than 100%. Thus, if we have a COEFFICIENT of 113 (which means that the RANGE is 113% of the AVERAGE TIDAL RANGE) [(3.4 x 113/100=3.842 metres) Thus we will have about (3.842 - 3.4)= 0.442 metre extra range of tide] In the above example w might expect (assuming a normal spring tide where the HW is a bit higher than normal, and the LW is a bit lower than normal) to find that the AVERAGE HIGH TIDE of 4.6 metres is higher by about half of the extra 13 percent predicted by the coefficient. So the LW may be, say, 0.2 metre lower and the HW will be 0.242 metres higher. [0.2+0.242=0.442 metres]. This spring tide example would be predicted to reach a HW of about (4.6 + 0.242)= 4.842 metres. >>>>> Strava is a distance and route timing APP which can be found in the App Store on your smart phone. Try it out and use it to measure what your crew achieves on the first of the " New Normal" rows!!! >>>> Hope this is of use, - any queries will be taken during the row! |

Well Nigel, i
would be interested in rowing, I estimate that I would be no 22 based on comments of people who want to row and of I am too late, then happy to stand down.

I shall post an update on this row on Friday evening, (to give people time to react if any changes are necessary.
⚠️🚣 In the meantime all looks good, with a healthy complement of rowers and a weather forecast of 17 knots SSW wind and improving conditions (cloudy becoming brighte, and low probability of rain). The temperatures (8 degC water, 11degC air) will mean you need to wrap up well (very well for coxes and non-rowers) as it is some time since people have had a chance to get acclimatised to on-the-water conditions! Don't forget your safety and (anti) covid gear. T&T is still in place, so when you arrive, snap the QR code &/or leave your contact details at the start of the row. The latter will be retained for 21 days as per .gov guidelines, then destroyed. |

Hi Nigel, I have just noticed that we have 6 in our boat. Is that a mistake as I thought we were not taking passengers?

Many thanks, Marion! The reason for 6 is because you have a passenger! Will explain on Monday. Well spotted!!!
Hard luck, John. Hope you get a row in soon! Thanks for your help this afternoon, Geoff! Welcome aboard, Frances. Temperature forecast is steadily going up. Hooray! [. I used a Langstone prediction for HW originally (12:20), but the chichester harbour prediction is 12:45+0010 for Monday, so expect actual local HW to be anywhere between 12:45 and 12:55. ] |
