Re: Hayling row update and provisional teams

We now have 15 signed up so room for 3 more.
Plan is to meet at 12.30 for a departure as soon as we can with high tide due at 14.57.

Wind seems OK but we will decide which way round we go close to the day based on maximising any wind advantage for the open sea bit. If we get time and collectively agree we can stop on the way back at either HISC or Ferryboat for a coffee.

Currently forecast warm but potentially some showers so be prepared please.

Once again I would like to suggest we do this as 3 boats staying relatively close.

Life jackets required please as we are on open water.

I am thinking Glayds, Celtic and either a galley or Mabel. Would be interested in the preferences. Will put together the crews on the day but so far I have

This will be of interest to you.
A large sand bar has formed at sandy point at the entrance to Chichester harbour and unless you catch the tide right I don’t think you will be able to row over it.  You might want to choose the deeper channel which will add a couple of hundred metres  to your course.

Winds looking to be SSW so good for an anti clockwise circuit.
Ideally meet at 12.30 to launch with a plan to get through langstone harbour entrance by 14.00. High tide is 14.54 so will get a good pull through but will make things good for our return through chichester.

Will be nice and sunny so please come prepared with lots of water and sun lotion.

I would also ask that each has a life jacket in the boat at least please.

Our proposed teams are:

Glayds:  Keith, Phil and the 4 GRR ladies of Karen, Josie, Jackie xnd Jenny.

SD:  Dave M, Chris, John P, Heather and Alison

Galley:  Vernon, Liz, Jo, Sarah and Dave C.

 Bearing in mind what has been posted about the sand bar.. As long as the tide is over 2 meters there is a passage close to shore. If you are  between 1200 and 1800 there is over 2 metres of water if you stay close to shore. Geoff

If Geoff had been me, ….(!) a few years ago …I would have said the same……but Les is right, so NO …don’t cut in short, you’ll come a cropper!
I recc’ied it today (Friday) at low tide , and yes the sand bar is now much more extensive than in previous years ( in fact, since I moved to this area in 1970) and unless you are going over it at top of tide you will run aground or be in shoaling water on a Lee shore.
I would be aiming to go over this sand bar at 13:30 earliest, to 15:30 latest, especially if cutting the corner off and keeping close inshore.

My own preference would have been to go out of the chi harbour entrance first (and tackle this tricky bit first) and then to follow the last of the west going tide ( with the following wind) towards the Langstone harbour entrance. You may have to slog a bit into wind and tide on the way home inside Langstone harbour, but at least it has shelter and stopping points!

If you go the anticlockwise route :- then you turn sharp left, close (50 metres) to the beach, at Langstone entrance, then head between 100 and 110 degrees [NOT direct to the chi entrance] towards a point about HALF WAY BETWEEN West Pole beacon [ WHICH IS NORTH OF THE LARGE CHICHESTER BAR BEACON ] and the visible entrance to Chichester Harbour.
Continue on that course until ……..the West Pole and Chichester Bar beacons ( on your right hand side) are in line , and chi entrance appears about 90 degrees on your left ( about due north of the boat) and ONLY THEN turn towards the entrance.
THAT WAY YOU MISS THE SANDBAR!
The sandbar extends SOUTHWARDS about ONE HALF MILE from the RED buoy at chi entrance towards the West Pole beacon.
Don’t confuse the breaking water on the sandbar, with the West Pole Sands which are further south and extend westwards for some distance. ….and will also have breaking water on them.
If you time the tide right (15:30 latest) you can cut the corner off / go close to shore, but be aware that, when following the posts on the granite groins around the corner, then after the “ basket” post there is a MISSING post at the end of the next groin. Stay outside of it. Do not go over the remains of the missing post!
You can pass inside (to the west) of the Red Buoy at the harbour entrance, but be careful of confused seas here.

Thanks Nigel, that was exactly my thoughts if we are heading into Chichester harbour. If we go anti-clockwise I would imagine we would be at the entrance about 15-30 minutes after high tide. Sorry for not saying hello but I was looking straight into the sun and didn’t recognise you, I only realised it was you when we passed you on the way home.

If you are worried about sand bar at hailing entrance. Perhaps you should think about the winner sand bar at Langstone entrance as it’s the same depth . Geoff
