Following the swamp test of Celtic Longboats carried out at Dell Quay and ESSC, the LCRC committee have asked for a test to be done on our boat.
Pete Reed and Myself are organising this. We would like some volunteers who are happy to get in the boat and test out her buoyancy with latest modifications.
We can run the test just outside the Mill slipway with enough depth of water (4.8 mtrs) at HW at 13:16.
In addition to Pete and Myself, would at least 4 others like to join us. Dressed in either wet suits or just swimming costumes. The sea temperature in September is warmer than it has been all summer.
Plan would be to take the boat out with oars in gates, then, ensuring we have plenty of water beneath the keel, lean the boat to one side until it fills and remain seated to see how stable it is and what effect the current bouyancy has. It may not be a recreation of a genuine swamping in rough conditions, but will give an idea of how stable the boat is, can it be used as a safe haven while a mayday call is made etc? It would help to share the experience with other club members if the process could be filmed on a mobile phone.
A line would be attached to the bow to someone on the shore. All in the boat would need to wear personal bouyancy. Please sign up below indicating if you would like to participate. Many of you might just want to observe.
