The Club’s new project - Solent galley ‘Fancy That’ arrives

A team of Cutters went to the Isle of Wight today to fetch the Solent galley ‘Fancy That’ from storage at Wootton Creek and bring her over after her purchase from the current owners for £450. She is currently at Colin’s house in Havant while we work out a plan of action and apply for grants.
Fancy That was probably built before the war for one of the Island clubs, possibly Sandown. She is extremely dry and some of the planks are split, but all the frames are intact and she has held her shape remarkably well, so she should be restorable.
The number of known Solent Galleys is now up to eight, and we have three of them.

Our technical team at work installing temporary supports for the stern in preparation for the tow home:

On the trailer ready for Steve to tow her away:

Waiting for the ferry:

Safe arrival:

Thanks to Steve for towing, Colin and Caroline for providing space in their garden and everyone for brain and muscle.

Brilliant. I’m impressed and grateful. It’s a very different scale I know but I recall someone involved in saving sailing wherries in Norfolk. The number surviving was tiny again, something like eight. Really worthwhile
