The Great River Race is the famous river marathon of 22
miles racing down the Thames from Richmond to Greenwich every
September. LCRC crews race against over
250 other traditional rowing boats of all shapes and sizes. Each boat carries a
cox, and passenger, who can also row. We do it for fun, for a sense of
achievement, to get fit and for charity fundraising.
The race is not for the fainthearted, 22 miles is over 3
hours of hard competitive rowing against many other boats on handicap - slowest
starts first. There are various classes - Clayton Skiff, Thames Waterman and
Four Oared; plus ladies and veteran’s trophies plus the usual fastest overall
and fastest on handicap, in all some 35 prizes that the 2000 people compete
for. It is the biggest and most
prestigious international race in Europe. Over
the years the club has had great success in this race as follows:
1999
Our first entry year in Gladys
earned third place in the Clayton Skiff Class, 22nd among 4 oared
boats and 34th overall –
a very creditable result, which put the Cutters on the GRR rowing map.
2000
We entered Gladys,
Mabel and borrowed a third Clayton Russell
Marsh. Mabel finished in 3 hours
5mins - WINNING the Claydon Skiff class
and came 18th overall.
The crew in Russell Marsh came third
in class and 50th overall.
Our ladies team in Gladys were
also the first ladies crew in the class, fourth boat in class - they completed
the course in 3 hrs 17 minutes and were 108th overall.
2001
This year we entered four boats, Gladys, Mabel, and the new Teifi Skiffs Millie and Lottie. Mabel
came second in class this time and 11th
overall - our highest position so far. Gladys came third in class. Millie
had a very creditable result, with a time of 2:46:37 they came 13th
overall, not far behind Mabel, showing
just how fast these boats can be. Lottie
also did well, with a time of 3:20:33.
2002
Again the club entered four boats, Gladys, Mabel, Millie and Lottie. The Teifis raced each other the whole way and
Lottie came 44th overall and just behind came a ladies crew in Millie who rowed the whole course, they
came 46th overall and WON THE
HARRY PURCHASE TROPHY for the Fastest ladies on handicap.
2003
This year pressure for boats meant we entered five crews Gladys, Mabel, Millie, Lottie and the
Langstone Ospreys in a Thames Salter Skiff.
To our great delight the Ospreys came in 5th overall and WINNING
two trophies the BOB CROUCH ROARING
FORTIES Trophy for veterans, and
the FIRST THAMES
SKIFF on handicap. Millie was 8th overall. Mabel
and Gladys third and fourth in the
Clayton Class.
2004
Again we entered five crews with the Ospreys defending their
trophy. The Salter Skiff came in an even
more creditable 2nd overall
(beaten by just 15 seconds) and retained
both trophies: the BOB CROUCH ROARING
FORTIES trophy for veterans, and
the FIRST THAMES SKIFF on handicap.
